MISSION OF LIEPAJA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND

To work and serve people with disabilities, to take care of their mental and practical needs, to promote the participation of people with disabilities so that everyone is involved, belonging and useful.

The Liepaja society for the blind was registered on 26th of August 2005. It is the inheritor of the obligations and duties of Liepaja territorial Organisation of the Latvian society for the blind.
According to data from March 2021, the Liepaja society for the blind has 902 members. In order to become a member of the association, it is necessary to write and submit a submission to the office of the Liepaja society for the blind (Liepaja, Ganibu Street 197/205, floor 2).

OBJECTIVE OF THE SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND OF LIEPAJA

To promote improvement in quality of life and integration into society for people with total or partial loss of vision, as well as for people with other types of disability by providing social rehabilitation and alternative rehabilitation services (services which are not provided for in MK Regulation No. 291 “Prasības sociālo pakalpojumu sniedzējiem”), as well as to represent and defend their common interests in various State, local government, public and other institutions, to bring people with disabilities together, motivate them to participate in the development of civil society, promote the exchange and access to information, organise educational, informative events, campaigns, address issues of education, employment and access to a normal living environment.

LIEPAJA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND OFFERS:

• Support in solving social and domestic problems;
• Contact and support groups;
• Training in the use of technical aids for people with visual disabilities (white orientation and support sticks, “talking” clocks, thermometers, audio book players, magnifying glasses, etc.);
• Computer training (including Braille) for the blind, the visually impaired and people with other disabilities, Braille training courses; home maintenance courses, wickering classes;
• Sports activities, i.e. exercise machines, walking, board games, table tennis for the blind, dart throwing, etc.;
• Music therapy classes for people with different disabilities
• The ability to learn piano for people with disabilities;
• We visit people with disabilities at their residence to determine their needs;
• Excursion, "International White walking stick day", etc.
• Informative educational seminars – “I want to introduce you to my world”, “Universal Design – availability of environment, services, products, information to all people”;
• A newsletter created by the society – “Gaisma tumsā” in Braille, as well as in audio format;
• We offer members free transportation if they can't come to the day center on their own;
• Near the day centre there is also a rehabilitation centre “School of life” where people can stay for 24 hours during the rehabilitation course;
• Lessons for people with disabilities as part of various projects (for more information look for the project section of the Liepaja society for the blind or by calling 26056026).

In accordance with the legal norms referred to in Section 2, Paragraph one, of the Law on public benefit organisations, in 2005 the following types of public benefit activities have been approved for the association:

• Protection of the rights of the individual;
• The development of civil society.

Since the association places particular emphasis in its activities ensuring accessibility of the environment throughout Latvia in conformity with the universal design, the representative of the Liepāja's society for the blind, M.Ceirulis, has been delegated to represent the interests of people with disabilities in the working group of the Ministry of Welfare for ensuring accessibe environment for people with functional disorders.

The Liepāja society for the blind coordinates the disabled district NVO cooperation network of the City of Liepāja, where 16 organisations have joined together. Liepājas society for the blind shall hold meetings of their representatives not less than once every two months in order to discuss current issues, gain support, receive initiatives or agree on further resolution of a matter.

The society has established its own charitable symbol – a mole, which when bought, funds can be donated for the purchase of technical aids.
