Why do you need a sauna building tailored to the needs for people with disabilities?

There are currently no sauna services available anywhere in Latvia that are adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, especially those in wheelchairs. Currently available public baths are impossible to use for these people, because they are often located in basements with no easy access and most are too narrow. Also often you have to put up with the treatment of other visitors.
The income of people with disabilities is very low and sauna services are expensive. It is therefore necessary to build a sauna in which they can recover and stabilise their health and receive social rehabilitation free of charge.

What has been done so far to implement the sauna project?

• The project was fully developed for us by a donation from the architect Agita Lieģe of SIA “A Projekts”.
• in 2019, we got funding for the construction of the sauna foundations on a 192 sq m site, the builder donated labour to build foundations and get a water supply, electricity and a sewer systems installed.
• In understanding the need, many other social partners have donated, both materials and labour, to date, more than €39,000 has been invested in the project.

People with disabilities themselves are complicit in the whole process - whether they're digging, aligning, sorting something, sowing, planting grass, etc. It's that wonderful added value that disabled people are complicit in the “Dvēseles veldzes dārzs” projects of all the areas built and landscaped so far. It's work therapy, socialising, for another- it's leisure time, for another it's satisfaction that he can be useful, involved,” says Māris Ceirulis about the project's value.
