Activities for people with disabilities and seniors

Everyone from the abovementioned target group is invited to take advantage of the possibilities provided by the day centre, which provides answers to important questions to visitors regarding social rehabilitation, association lessons, housing, transport, co-habitation, formatting documents for submission to state and local government institutions, etc. Once the epidemiological situation improves, regular trips to the social rehabilitation and cognition centre in the rural environment “Dvēseles veldzes dārzs”, in Ziemupe, will also be organised to motivate the use of services provided in the rural environment. Day Center activities are organized according to an individual plan.

The “Dzīves skola” social inclusion course will also continue, where, if the country's epidemiological situation permits, contact groups will be organised twice a month on average to work together, discuss current affairs or meet with an invited guest. There will also be tours to various interesting places in Kurzeme municipality and visits to various institutions and organisations in Liepāja, which also provides services to people with disabilities, such as health, sports, cultural institutions, or small outdoor hikes. Each will also be provided with individual consultations (face-to-face and telephone) and assisted in solving various daily issues. (assistant services, technical aids, support facilities, etc.). To further support people with disabilities and seniors during this time of change, the society will launch a “Palīdzēsim cits citam” promotion this year, as part of which help to meet basic needs will be provided. Working with charities and social assistance organisations will attract donations such as furniture, household appliances, clothing and help with food delivery, bringing them to the residence of disabled people and seniors with disabilities if necessary.

The association will also organise various events in which not only members of Liepājas' society for the blind, but also residents of Liepāja city can participate. Interested parties have been invited to participate in several twinning events “Draugs – nāc draudzēsimies!”, various sports activities, excursions, visits to the beach accessibility complex for people with disabilities, Christmas event, celebration of "International White walking stick day" – street act for motorists “Cilvēks ar balto spieķi” craft exhibition and open door days. Events and activities will be organised in accordance with the epidemiological security rules in place at the time.

There will be research, educational seminars and consultations in the field of universal design

As part of the project, an informative study will be carried out in cooperation with Liepāja University on the conformity and change of colour of the white cane for blind people. The study will be developed throughout the life of the project and completed in December 2021. It will serve as an important document that could be submitted to the European Union body responsible for dealing with the matter, or even to the World Congress.

In order to inform the public about the needs of people with functional disorders, seminars on emotional intelligence, universal design and how to work with people with disabilities and their support persons will be organised for those working in the field of various services – employees of the health institution, entrepreneurs, representatives of local governments, employees of the educational institution, etc. In addition, businesses, institutions and individuals alike have the opportunity to apply for consultations in the field of universal design. The expert on universal design and social inclusion will carry out surveys of various institutions, buildings, renovated buildings and new constructions to advise on both face-to-face, telephone and electronic issues of environmental accessibility and compliance with related conditions. Students, representatives of institutions and organizations, families and camp participants will have the opportunity to participate in “Nāc, iepazīsti manu pasauli!” During these guided tours participants will be able to acquaint themselves with the Liepāja society for the blind and gain empathetic experience by walking through the society with a walking stick blindfolded.

Throughout the project, provision of up-to-date information to members of the association and the wider public will be implemented, using the opportunities provided by social media, website and the society's newspaper. The “Gaisma tumsā” edition of the Liepāja society of the blind will inform about the possibilities offered to participate in the society and will inform about the most important news/current events for people with disabilities and seniors with functional disorders, such as social support opportunities, changes in legislation affecting this target group, etc., through the new Annex.

Each of this year's activities shall be planned in such a way that their implementation is possible, taking into account the epidemiological situation in the country and taking into account the established restrictions related to COVID-19, including, if necessary, over a longer period of time.
