We've done a lot by looking back at everything we've done!

From spring till the end of this year, the Liepāja society for the blind hosts a social inclusion project funded by the city of Liepāja, “Palīdzēsim cits citam iedrošinot un praktiski atbalstot” No. 26/2.8.5., which was designed to promote networking, motivation and daring of people with functional disorders to engage in improvement of their quality of life.

This year, taking into account all epidemiological constraints, we have successfully implemented all project activities, namely with some adaptations.

The essence of this project was to strengthen the sustainability of activities already underway at the Liepāja society for the blind, and then, throughout the duration of the project, we also continued the work carried out so far at the Centre of Liepāja society for the blind. Trips were organised for people with disabilities to the social rehabilitation and cognition centre in the rural environment “Dvēseles veldzes dārzs” to motivate each of them to also engage in the social rehabilitation. Similarly, to the social rehabilitation and cognition centre in the rural environment “Dvēseles veldzes dārzs” in Ziemupe, regular trips have also been organised for less active and new members of the society. During the project we were also able to provide 7 subsidised jobs for people with disabilities, provided transport services.

On October 15th, we organized a street event for motorists and a handicrafts exhibition at the society's premises throughout the festive week. As the International White walking stick day could not take place in person, a video plot featuring congratulatory speech to members, volunteers, supporters was filmed. Grateful gifts have been provided during the festive week to the society's most active volunteers, who have been actively involved for the benefit of the society.

This year we continue the class cycle of the Social inclusion "Dzīves skola" course. Because of the restrictions in the country, we spent a lot of time directly in the fresh air. Contact groups were organised both in small groups and individually. The society found various alternative ideas, such as masterclasses. In addition to all this, individual consultations have taken place during which every project participant had the opportunity to receive an answer to a question of interest to him or her. Every appointment or walk made it possible for a project participant to be aware of himself or herself as an active Member of society, living an active and full life, regardless of his or her physical or emotional state.
This year, for the third year in a row, from May to August this year, we organized a twinning event cycle for people with disabilities and seniors “Draugs, nāc draudzēsimies.” , where emphasis was placed on the care of physical activity and healthy lifestyle by organising orientation competitions in the city environment of Liepāja and informative/artistic, where each participant was able to discover his or her talents and afford to be a little playful.

Within the framework of the project, we successfully continued the seminar on emotional intelligence and universal design, organising it this year for drivers of long-distance transport of Liepāja bus park and between regional route buses. During the entire duration of the project, individual consultations have been held for both natural and legal persons regarding environmental accessibility issues and universal design. This year, for the first time as part of the social inclusion course, we held a “Palīdzēsim cits citam” promotion during which we tried to find an opportunity to help anyone who was in crisis.
As part of the project, together with Liepāja University, we conducted an informative study on the conformity and change of colour of the aid (white cane) for blind people.
