From 24th October to 28th October, 10 representatives of the Liepaja society for the blind travelled to Cyprus to explore the natural wealth and geology of Cyprus and participate in the international meeting of  the project “Ģeoloģija cilvēkiem ar redzes traucējumiem un cilvēkiem ar invaliditāti” 2020-2023, which aims to provide students and educators with special attention to visually impaired and disabled people, opportunities to enjoy the experience of Geoparks and familiarise them with the sciences of the Earth. The project also aims to provide educational tools (maps and interactive audiovisual content) that will be designed to enable schools, teachers and pupils to understand geoparks remotely, as well as to facilitate navigation for people with disabilities in real-world visits.

This time we visited our partners from Limassol.

Our fascinating journey began in Pafosa, Afrodite's mythical homeland, where we looked at archaeological mosaics and learned many different myths. We visited the Afrodite rocks and Curion's Greek-Roman theatre.

On the second day we went to the special school “Paidiko Anarrotirio” in Limassol, which is like a day centre for people with special needs. We had the opportunity to draw on new ideas for dealing with people with disabilities. As well as partners, they shared experiences and contributions to the project with each other.

We visited Troodos Geopark on the third day and learned a lot of new information from geologists. We learned about the geological treasures of Mount Troodos, with all groups of ofiolite rocks in ascending order. We looked at the beautiful Geopark flora. Across the territory of the geopark, there were 92 different endemic cyprus plants from a recorded total of 143.

On day four, we had the opportunity to look into the capital Nicosia and attend the School for the blind. This school supports and provides training for every blind, visually impaired person in Cyprus, the school helps people to integrate into society.

On the last day we had the opportunity to enjoy the old Town of Limassol and enjoy the beautiful warm weather.
