Liepaja society for the blind hosts “White walking stick days” activities
Each year, the annual “International White walking stick day” is celebrated on October 15th. Aimed at drawing public attention to the needs of people who have visual disabilities. From October 11th to October 15th, 2021, the Liepāja society for the blind invites to see an exhibition of handicrafts made by people with disabilities.
October 11th-15th from 10:00-16:00, at the Liepāja society for the blind you will be able to see the exhibition of handicrafts made by people with disabilities –wickerwork, felting, tapping, floristry and ceramics.
October 15th from noon, a street event will take place on Ģenerāļa Baloža Street, Liepāja, between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. “We urge drivers to be observant and cautious on the road during the street promotion,” urges Māris Ceirulis, Chairman of the society.
The street act is held annually in collaboration with the State Police, which informs the public about people with visual disabilities. Latvian Road traffic Regulations provide that in any case the driver of road transport, also outside pedestrian crossings, must let blind pedestrians pass, indicating a signal with a white cane. In places where blind and partially sighted people most often move, a special road sign “blind pedestrians” is also installed, but often people with a white cane are not observed outside the scope of this sign.
This year, due to the covid restrictions in the country, the White walking stick day event will not take place in person, but you are welcome to the society for the blind of Liepāja to see the exhibition, watch the presentation and video of what has been done within the framework of Liepāja City Council, Society Integration Foundation and other projects.
