“Informed and knowledgeable employee — good assistant to fellow human being” — true fact
21 employees of the Liepāja's society for the blind and 12 volunteers this year on June 30th and July 1st had an opportunity to draw on new knowledge, as well as to strengthen existing one - in the seminar “Covid-19 pandēmijas rezultātā izraisīto mentālo un fizisko seku mazināšana cilvēkiem ar invaliditāti un emocionālā inteliģence kā instruments cilvēku ar invaliditāti sociālai iekļaušanai sabiedrībā.”
On day one, staff and volunteers had the opportunity to learn about the nature of emotional intelligence, the concept of disability, the medical and social model of disability. Societal stereotypes, prejudice about people with disabilities and how to overcome it . We learned about the types of functional disorders, their impact on personality and barriers to a socially active life. The importance of family and other peers' support for successful adaptation and integration into society. We also obtained recommendations for dealing with people with disabilities.
The seminar participants themselves had the opportunity to empathize in the practice sessions by trying imitation glasses that depict various eye diseases, walking the area blindfolded, developing other senses.
On day two, we had the opportunity to draw knowledge from Maija Agatina, head of the day centre for people with mental developmental disabilities. We learned about social rehabilitation services and the possibilities of the day centre, as well as about contact and communication types thereof with persons with mental disorders. There was a lot of motivation and joy to work.
The other lecturer, Seaside Hospital psychiatrist Evija Siliņa, enriched our knowledge by telling us about the structure, functions around the disorder CNS. We learned about the specifics of sensory integration in people with psychiatric disorders. Impairment of sensor functions and integration in case of COVID-19. As well as the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic's stress-related disorders for those with mental illnesses.
