Emotional competence and Universal Design seminars have concluded
What even is emotional competence and universal design?
Students of Liepāja University courses 1 and 4, as well as employees of the social housing house of the Baložu street, can answer this question with certainty. During the seminars, participants could not only theoretically learn about these terms, but also practically apply them.
The seminars discussed topics such as discrimination, stereotypes, prejudice. You could learn about different types of disability, vision problems, principles of universal design, service dogs and the provision of transport services for people with disabilities.
During the seminars, participants were able to get into the "shoes" of people with disabilities and understand what it's like to move around, recognize their surroundings and objects if they were deprived of the senses by which 80% of the information was received.
Participants donned a variety of eye disease simulation goggles during the seminars so they could understand more about how people who have different eye diseases feel - cataract, glaucoma, damage to the vitreous body, retinal detachment, side vision, tunnel vision, diabetes. They tried to orient themselves with blindfolded eyes using a white cane, using other senses trying to recognise different objects and plants. In turn, moving in a wheelchair gave participants a very high sense of empathy, knowing how difficult it is to move in a wheelchair on an inappropriate road surface.
Māris Ceirulis, Director of the society, led the seminar.
If such seminars were binding on employees of another company, institution or organization, we would encourage you to contact the Liepaja society for the blind at +371 22007874 or by emailing info@redzigaismu.lv
